The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has raised the alert level for Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island to Alert Level 3 following an explosive eruption on December 9.

Continuous Seismic Activity Precedes Alert Level Upgrade

Kanlaon has been exhibiting persistent seismic activity since June of this year, but remained at Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) until the December eruption.

The upgrade to Alert Level 3 (magmatic unrest) signifies that a “magmatic eruption has begun that may progress to further explosive eruptions,” according to Phivolcs.

What Does Alert Level 3 Mean?

Alert Level 3 indicates a heightened state of volcanic unrest and signifies an increased risk of hazardous events. Residents and tourists near the volcano are advised to exercise extreme caution and heed all warnings and advisories issued by Phivolcs.
