Amsterdam: Police Arrest Two Youths in Connection to Plein ’40-’45 Riots
In a swift response to the chaotic scenes that unfolded on Plein ’40-’45, Amsterdam police have detained two young individuals suspected of openly violent behavior during the riots. The arrestees are a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man.
The disorder erupted amidst a city-wide emergency decree enacted following the unrest and violence that ensued after the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv match some days prior. The tranquil Plein ’40-’45 was marred by vandalism, with a tram set ablaze and property damage allegedly caused by projectiles and fireworks. The police’s Mobile Unit intervened to restore order.
This latest development follows the arrests of seven young suspects in December, aged between 14 and 21. During that round-up, officers also seized heavy fireworks. In the aftermath of the riots, several others were apprehended for setting a police vehicle on fire and assaulting a cyclist.
As investigations continue, Amsterdam authorities remain vigilant in ensuring the safety of its citizens and preventing further lawlessness.
