Govt pushes intercropping in forests for food sufficiency

Denpasar (ANTARA) – The government is promoting the implementation of an intercropping agricultural system, locally known as tumpang sari, as part of its plan to utilize 20 million hectares of land as food, water, and energy reserves.

Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni delivered the statement while responding to concerns of forest areas to support the food self-sufficiency program that would lead to deforestation.

“The idea is this 20.6 million hectares will remain as forest area. It will not be cleared, destroyed, or deforested—but we will maximize the function of the forests,” he said here on Thursday.
