YAKKUM Emergency Unit Launches Innovative Women-Led Resilience Training
In a significant step towards building disaster-resistant communities, the YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) recently conducted a comprehensive training program focused on anticipatory action and climate resilience. Titled “Anticipatory Action and Climate Action Training to Build Women-Led Resilience,” this hybrid event spanned five days from November 18 to 22, 2024, integrating both offline and online components to reach a broader audience.
Program Highlights
The intensive training was held at the Disaster Oasis Training Centre (DIOS) in Sleman for participants attending in person. Meanwhile, online participants joined via Zoom, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity. Sponsored by the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) and Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH), the program aimed to empower local organizations with the knowledge and skills necessary for proactive disaster risk reduction.
Four local partners of YEU took part in this transformative training: Center for Child Study and Protection, Kinasih Women Solidarity, Flores Children Development (FREN) Foundation, and Walang Perempuan Foundation. These organizations play a crucial role in their communities, and the training provided them with the tools to lead women in Disaster Risk Management (DRM).
Training Objectives and Activities
The core focus of the training was to deepen understanding and capacity for innovative, women-led anticipatory actions in DRM. Topics covered included detailed studies of disaster management cycles, the essential components of anticipatory action, and the critical role of feminist approaches in tackling climate change impacts effectively.
Facilitated by Dhinar Riski from YEU and Suparlan from SHEEP Indonesia, the training sessions were interactive and insightful. Riski and Suparlan emphasized the pioneering nature of this initiative, aiming to strengthen the capacity of local organizations in Indonesia for anticipatory actions. They expressed hope that the model could inspire similar programs in the future.
Outcome and Next Steps
Following the completion of the training, each local partner developed early action protocol plans. These plans will be further refined through collaboration with women’s groups in their respective villages, ensuring that they are tailored to meet local needs effectively.
This initiative marks a substantial stride towards fostering resilient communities that are better equipped to face future challenges. By empowering women with the necessary knowledge and skills, the training program contributes to a more inclusive, robust, and sustainable disaster risk reduction framework in Indonesia.
Conclusion
The success of this training underscores the importance of collaborative efforts and innovative approaches in disaster risk management. By leveraging the strengths of local organizations and fostering women-led initiatives, communities can build a more resilient future, better prepared to withstand the impacts of climate change.
