## Austrian Robotics Team Develops UV-Powered ‘Intelligent Hygiene Robot’ to Combat Hospital Infections
A new robot designed by an Austrian research team is poised to revolutionize infection control in hospitals. This “intelligent hygiene robot,” developed by the Austrian Institute for Chemistry and Technology (OFI), uses ultraviolet (UV) light to neutralize bacteria and other pathogens, offering a potentially significant solution to the challenge of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).
Gabriele Ettenberger-Bornberg, a food and biotechnologist who led the project, highlights the crucial need for high hygiene standards in healthcare settings. “Maintaining these standards is incredibly challenging,” she explains, “and HAIs pose a severe risk, especially to patients with weakened immune systems.”
Traditional disinfection methods often involve harsh chemicals and require meticulous precautions to protect staff from exposure. Ettenberger-Bornberg emphasizes the robot’s advantage in this regard: “With a robot, there’s no need to worry about infection risks for staff.”
The robot’s three-step process ensures thorough sanitation. It begins with a dry cleaning using a rotating brush, followed by an optional wet cleaning step. This pre-cleaning is essential for the UV light to effectively penetrate surfaces. Finally, the robot employs mercury-free UV-LED lamps, emitting targeted UV radiation that disables pathogens by altering their DNA, preventing them from multiplying.
“Our system has proven effective,” says Ettenberger-Bornberg. “We’re now focusing on research to determine the optimal wavelengths for targeting specific pathogens.” The team also honed the robot’s autonomous navigation abilities for hospital environments and developed a monitoring tool to document cleaned areas, meeting the stringent recording requirements of healthcare facilities.
The project, dubbed “Robides,” is a testament to OFI’s commitment to addressing pressing hygiene challenges. As Ettenberger-Bornberg emphasizes, “Hygiene has been a key research priority at OFI since 2013. We focus on questions with current market potential and strong research trends.”
The development of this innovative UV-powered cleaning robot represents a significant leap forward in the fight against HAIs. Its autonomous functionality, combined with the proven efficacy of UV disinfection, provides a more efficient, safer, and environmentally friendly approach to maintaining hygiene in hospitals, ultimately contributing to improved patient outcomes and a stronger public health system.
