Bulgaria: A Rising Force in International Security
Bulgaria’s commitment to Ukraine during a time of international crisis and its own burgeoning political stability have positioned the country as a growing player in global security. Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov, in an exclusive interview with Archyde, highlighted this evolving role, emphasizing Bulgaria’s dedication to its national security and its alliances.
"Our support for Ukraine is steadfast," Zapryanov declared, noting that all military aid provided aligns with decisions made by the National Assembly in 2022 and 2023. This unwavering backing for Ukraine reflects a wider commitment to upholding international law and supporting democratic values.
The recent formation of a new government in Bulgaria has brought an end to a period of political turmoil. Zapryanov expressed confidence in the nation’s stability on the international stage, stating, "We are now perceived as a stable nation with a long-term vision. This stability enables us to better safeguard Bulgaria’s interests."
This sense of stability is further reflected in Zapryanov’s commitment to professionalism within the Ministry of Defence. He emphasized the lack of politically motivated appointments, prioritizing expertise and a focus on core missions. "The team I work with is entirely professional and expert-driven," he asserted.
Looking ahead, Zapryanov outlined ambitious plans to strengthen Bulgaria’s defence capabilities. The arrival of two F-16 fighter jets from the United States in April marks a significant milestone in this process. These aircraft, alongside the growing number of trained pilots, will significantly enhance Bulgaria’s air defence capabilities and contribute to regional security.
Reflecting on Bulgaria’s evolving role in international security, Zapryanov expressed a clear vision: "Bulgaria’s role in international security is poised to grow as we continue to strengthen our defence capabilities and maintain our commitments to alliances like NATO."
