All you need to know as European football returns

After a six-week break over the Christmas and New Year period, European football is ready to return this week, with a host of Premier League sides in action.

With qualification for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League knockout stages at stake, and a possible extra European spot for the Premier League next season up for grabs, there is plenty to play for.

UEFA Champions League

Under this season’s new format, the top eight sides in the league phase qualify automatically for the round of 16, on 4-5 & 11-12 March. The 16 teams placed ninth to 24th compete in a two-legged knockout phase playoff on 11-12 and 18-19 February for a place in the round of 16.
