Determinants of Access to HIV Testing in Cameroon: Data from the 2018

Introduction

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) remains one of the most significant public health challenges worldwide. To date, 85.6 million individuals have contracted HIV, resulting in 40.4 million deaths recorded.1 Recent data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2022 indicated that in Africa, an estimated 25.6 million people were living with HIV, with 660,000 new cases and 380,000 deaths attributed to HIV-related causes within the year.2 According to the 2020 Cameroon spectrum, there were about 506,432 PLHIV in 2019 and 14,058 HIV-related deaths recorded in Cameroon.3 The prevalence of HIV in Cameroon, as per the 2018 Demographic and Health Survey, stands at 2.7%, with six out of ten regions reporting a prevalence higher than the national…
