Holocaust memorials persist in Muslim countries amid antisemitism

Despite an October 7 attack and rising antisemitism in the Muslim world, a new report highlights ongoing efforts to preserve Jewish heritage. The Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry at Tel Aviv University (TAU) released its fourth annual report, “For a Righteous Cause,” focusing on initiatives globally to safeguard Jewish heritage, educate about the Holocaust, and combat antisemitism and racism.

Published the day before International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the report sheds light on significant projects, such as Indonesia’s first permanent Holocaust exhibition, “Shoah: How is it Humanly Possible,” located in North Sulawesi province. It also features Dubai’s permanent “We Remember” exhibition at the Crossroads of Civilizations Museum and the upcoming “Besa Museum” and Museum of the History of Albanian Jews in Tirana and Vlora, Albania.

A Light Amidst Darkness

“Holocaust denial and the flourishing of antisemitic propaganda in the Muslim world are not just distortions of history but also encouragements to violence,” said Prof. Uriya Shavit, Head of the Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry. “These museums, while small, are very important beacons of light in this challenging landscape.”

International Support for Holocaust Preservation

Dr. Carl Yonker, Senior Researcher and Project Manager at the Center, emphasized the delicate nature of these initiatives and the need for international support. “Direct or indirect support from Israel could jeopardize these museums. However, international institutions should provide support and push for the eradication of Holocaust denial from educational curriculums in Muslim countries, just as they do elsewhere.”
