When is it safe to mix with others after chickenpox?

My three-year-old picked up chicken pox from another child at a family party. Thankfully, it was a mild dose, and he recovered within the week. However, his childminder says he needs to stay home for another week, putting us under work pressure. What would you recommend?

Chickenpox is a pain. Apart from the misery for the person who has it, the virus is contagious and can be disruptive for those who come in contact with the patient. We have started vaccinating children against chickenpox, so hopefully, there will be fewer cases in future.
