Devastating Floods Grip North Queensland: One Confirmed Dead, Mass Evacuations Ordered
Tragedy has struck as deadly floods devastate parts of north Queensland, forcing mass evacuations and claiming the life of one person. Heavy rains, fueled by two tropical lows, have inundated regions from Mackay to south of Cairns.
Flood Waters Claim a Life
Authorities confirmed the death of an individual in Ingham, one of the hardest-hit areas, during a daring rescue attempt. Queensland Police revealed that a rescue boat capsized while attempting to evacuate residents from flooded zones.
“The person was not an SES member and is believed to be a community member,” stated Queensland Police.
Townsville Faces Dire Conditions
Townsville, bearing the brunt of the onslaught, has already received over 500mm of rain, with forecasts predicting further downpours in the coming days. Emergency warnings are currently in place for six suburbs: Cluden, Hermit Park, Idalia, Oonoonba, Railway Estate, and Rosslea. Residents in these “black zone” areas have been instructed to evacuate by midday Sunday.
Premier Urges Urgent Action
Premier David Crisafulli emphasized the severity of the situation, urging residents not to underestimate the threat. “Some of the falls we saw overnight in different parts were, quite frankly, at incredible levels,” he cautioned on ABC24. “If people are in a situation where they believe that is a prospect, don’t take the risk. Please leave.”
Herbert River Reaches Critical Levels
The Herbert River, currently at 14.8 meters, has neared its record 1967 level of 15.2 meters. Flash flooding and road damage have also been reported, hampering rescue efforts and adding to the disruption.
Seeking Safety
Swift water rescue teams, comprising Queensland Police, the SES, and defence personnel, are actively deployed in and around flood-affected areas. Anyone feeling threatened or unsafe is urged to call emergency services.
Continued Warnings and Support
Emergency warnings remain in place for the Hinchinbrook Shire, with authorities advising residents to stay put and seek higher ground.
The Australian and Queensland governments have activated personal hardship assistance for affected residents. “The next 24 hours it is absolutely critical that you listen to emergency services and stay alive to the alerts,” said Shane Chelepy, state disaster co-ordinator.
Potential for Record Flooding
It is feared that the floods could surpass the 2018 levels experienced in Ingham Pump Station, Halifax, Gleneagle, Abergowie Bridge, and Gairloch.
Heavy Rain and Landslides
Townsville and surrounding areas have endured cyclonic-like rainfall, with some areas receiving over 600mm in the past 24 hours, following isolated seven-day totals exceeding 900mm. The Bureau of Meteorology warns of potential widespread flooding, property damage, and landslides as a result of the deluge.
“We’ve seen torrential rainfall continue across the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of North Tropical Coast, with widespread falls of 200 to 300 millimetres with isolated falls in excess of that,” said senior meteorologist Dean Narramore. “We could even be talking about places in excess of one metre over the next few days. That is an incredible amount of rainfall.”
Residents Remember Past Devastation
Local worker Matthew James echoed the terrifying experience from 2019 when Townsville experienced its largest rainfall weather event in 120 years. “I still now am seeing places that have either just finished being repaired or completely refurbished after the 2019 floods,” he told AAP. “So you can imagine if you lived in one of those houses that flooded, you’d probably be thinking now you might be in trouble.”
