CALGARY — On Saturday, Mitch Marner juked through the Edmonton Oilers’ defence to score a beautiful game-winning goal and helped his Toronto Maple Leafs, in the frantic, dying seconds, hang on to a playoff-style 4-3 victory.
Riding the high of victory, the star hugged his goalie, walked off the ice to be gifted a Hockey Night in Canada towel, then happily sang his teammates’ praises in post-game interviews.
Three days later, the Maple Leafs are preparing for Marner — the team leader in points (70) and ice time — to miss his first game of the season, Tuesday night at Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome.
