Jury Selection Underway for Trial of Man Charged with Attacking Salman Rushdie
Jury selection has commenced at the US trial of Hadi Matar, who stands accused of stabbing author Sir Salman Rushdie, leaving him blind in one eye.
Matar, 27, pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault in the August 2022 attack. The trial at Chautauqua County Court in New York State, which faced delays, will include testimonies from Rushdie and the accused.
Initial Delays and Jurisdictional Concerns
The trial was initially scheduled for a start in January 2024. However, it was pushed back twice. The defense team requested an extension, citing the pending release of Rushdie’s memoir about the incident, which they sought to review as potential evidence.
In October, Matar’s legal team attempted to relocate the trial to another county, arguing the high-profile nature of the case and the small, predominantly non-Arab-American population of Mayville, the trial’s original venue. Despite these efforts, the trial proceeded as scheduled in Chautauqua County Court.

The Attack on Salman Rushdie
On August 12, 2022, Rushdie was stabbed up to ten times during a public event at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York. Matar, then 24, is accused of sprinting onto the stage and perpetrating the attack.
The injuries sustained by Rushdie were severe. His liver was damaged, he lost vision in one eye, and he suffered nerve damage in his arm, resulting in partial paralysis in his hand.

Broader Implications and Related Charges
The stabbing of Rushdie was not an isolated incident but part of a long-standing controversy surrounding his 1988 novel, “The Satanic Verses.” The book stirred outrage among some Muslims who considered its contents blasphemy, leading to its banning in several countries.
A year after the book’s publication, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, issued a fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death and offering a $3 million reward. This event marked a pivotal moment in the debate surrounding literary freedom and religious sensitivities.
