Indonesia Halts Trump’s Lido Project Amid Environmental Concerns

Jakarta – The Indonesian environment ministry has ordered PT MNC Land, a prominent Indonesian property developer, to suspend work on the Lido tourism project, which is associated with U.S. President Donald Trump. The decision follows concerns over improper water management and environmental lapses.

Lido Project Overview

The Lido integrated resort spans an extensive 3,000 hectares, located approximately 60 kilometers south of Jakarta. It boasts a new Trump golf course, which opened to members last year. Future phases of the project include a luxury hotel, residential units, a theme park, and a motion picture studio, all under the management of the Trump Organization and coordinated by MNC Land.

Environmental Issues

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry highlighted issues with rainwater management at the Lido site. These mismanagement practices have led to sediment accumulation in Lido Lake, significantly reducing its size from 24 hectares to 12 hectares. This decline poses serious threats to the surrounding ecosystem.

Another critical concern outlined by the ministry is MNC Land’s failure to adhere to the approved environmental assessment document for the project. The deviation between planned and actual environmental protection measures has sparked major concerns.

Both MNC Land and the Trump Organization declined to comment on the situation, stating they had not received formal notice from regulatory authorities at the time of publication.

‘The discrepancy between the environmental plans and physical implementation raises serious concerns for preserving natural resources,’ said Ardyanto Nugroho, director of environmental supervision at the ministry. To proceed with development, MNC Land must submit a revised environmental assessment document, according to the ministry.

Previously, the Lido project had gained significant momentum after Indonesia’s former President, Joko Widodo, designated the area a special economic zone. This designation promised reduced taxes, expedited permits, and other benefits to bolster MNC Land’s investment.
