With all of the centre-backs out injured, Real Madrid were stuck in a rut. The next two games were the Madrid derby, and Manchester City in the Champions League, both coming at the worst possible time. Still, the fixtures had to be played – and it was Raúl Asencio who was summoned to take the reins in defence. Dani Ceballos sat in the midfield and the attacking front three was as star-studded as usual. Lucas Vázquez captained Real Madrid in the derby.
