Fine Gael is to initiate a disciplinary process against Senator Martin Conway, who resigned from the parliamentary party yesterday after confirming that he had been arrested but failed to inform party headquarters.
The Clare-based senator issued a brief statement in which he said he was arrested on 22 January on O’Connell Street in Dublin “for being in an intoxicated state due to consumption of sleeping tablets and alcohol”.
“I was detained at Store Street Garda Station and subsequently released without charge a number of hours later. This was not disclosed to the party,” Mr Conway added.
