Pope Francis has been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic for treatment of ongoing bronchitis, the Vatican announced on Friday.

The 88-year-old pontiff was taken to the hospital after his daily audiences, where he has continued his activities despite being diagnosed with bronchitis last Thursday.

“Pope Francis will be admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic for necessary diagnostic tests and to continue hospital treatment for his ongoing bronchitis,” the Vatican stated.

The duration of his stay at the hospital remains unclear.

While Pope Francis appeared at recent Wednesday general audiences at the Vatican, he requested an aide to read his prepared remarks. “Me, with my bronchitis, I cannot (read) still,” he expressed on Wednesday. “I hope that next time I can.”

Pope Francis’ health has been a concern for some time. He had part of his lung removed as a young man and has frequently battled health issues, including bouts of bronchitis during the winter months. He relies on a wheelchair, walker or cane for mobility and recently suffered two falls, injuring his arm and chin.

Rome’s Gemelli hospital, the largest in the city, has a dedicated suite for treating popes. Pope Francis previously stayed at Gemelli for nine days in June 2023, undergoing surgery to repair an abdominal hernia.
