Delhi Government Orders Investigation into Arvind Kejriwal Residence Over Alleged Irregularities

New Delhi:

The Centre has initiated an investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the renovation of Arvind Kejriwal’s former official residence, located at 6 Flagstaff Road. The investigation was triggered by a report submitted by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) on February 13, 2024.

Investigation into the 6 Flagstaff Road Bungalow

The CPWD has been instructed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into suspicions that building norms were breached during the construction. The residence, spanning 40,000 square yards (or 8 acres), has been dubbed the “Sheeshmahal” by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The inquiry aims to uncover if government regulations were circumvented to facilitate the building’s expansion.

BJP’s Stance and Actions

Delhi BJP chief, Virendra Sachdeva, called on Lt. Governor VK Saxena to revoke the merger of four government properties with the 6 Flagstaff Road bungalow. In a letter to the Lt. Governor, Sachdeva alleged that the bungalow’s expansion was carried out through unauthorized property mergers.

The BJP has taken a firm stand against Kejriwal, declaring that the newly elected Chief Minister, should the BJP win the upcoming 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, will not occupy the bungalow.

Background of the Controversy

The reconstructed bungalow served as Kejriwal’s official residence from 2015 to October 2024. Kejriwal vacated the premises after resigning as Chief Minister amidst intense political scrutiny from the BJP. The opposition party had made corruption a central theme of its electoral campaign for the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections.

CPWD Report and BJP Campaign

The PWD report, released in October 2024, highlighted the lavish renovations and high-end appliances installed at the bungalow. This report provided the BJP with ample ammunition to continue its attacks on the AAP leadership.

During a political rally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a veiled criticism of Kejriwal, stating, “In the last 10 years, Delhi has been plagued by an ‘AAPda’. AAP has descended as a calamity on Delhi. I could have built a ‘Sheeshmahal’ too, but I chose to build over 4 crore homes for the poor.”

Kejriwal’s Response

Kejriwal dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, accusing the BJP of using personal attacks to divert attention from its own alleged failures in Delhi.

The 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections

The BJP’s relentless campaign against Kejriwal over the past two years appears to have worked, as the BJP secured 48 out of 70 assembly seats. In contrast, the AAP won 22 seats, and the Congress party failed to win any seats.

Implications for Future Governance

The controversy surrounding the renovation of Kejriwal’s former residence has raised significant concerns about transparency and accountability in public infrastructure management. The investigation will likely play a crucial role in understanding whether the renovation adhered to government regulations and norms.

Conclusion

As the dust settles post-election and the probe into the 6 Flagstaff Road bungalow continues, the eyes of the nation remain fixed on whether Kejriwal’s allegations of political motivation hold water or if indeed irregularities occurred. The investigation’s findings could have far-reaching implications for future governance and transparency in public constructions.
