University of Iowa’s Gymnastics Dominates Illinois with Resilient Performance
CORALVILLE, Iowa – In a match that displayed resilience and skill, the University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team secured a narrow victory against Illinois, scoring 196.200 to Illinois’s 194.975 on Sunday afternoon inside Xtream Arena.
GymHawks Excel Despite Thin Lineup
In a meet where the GymHawks’ lineup was limited, they claimed standout individual performances in three out of four events. The Hawkeyes reached season-high team scores in the beam and floor exercises. A particular highlight was the floor routine, where four gymnasts achieved scores of 9.900 or higher. Emily Erb, a junior, set the tone for the floor exercise segment by tying the program record with a perfect score of 9.975.
Individual Highlights and Team Performance
Other notable performances included those of Karina Muñoz and Aurélie Tran who both matched their season-best scores in the all-around competition with scores of 39.350 each.
Bars
The Hawkeyes maintained their lead after the bars routine, scoring 48.625. Aurélie Tran took top honors with a 9.825, sharing the event title with a teammate. Karina Muñoz claimed third place with a 9.775. Adeline Kenlin, a senior, made her season debut on bars and scored a 9.725. Both Ilka Juk and Kaia Vanney, seniors and juniors respectively, added to the team’s score with 9.650s.
With scores of 97.650 to 97.025 at halftime, the Hawkeyes were leading Illinois comfortably.
Floor Exercise
Towards the end of the meet, the Hawkeyes finished strongly, scoring an exceptional 49.375 on the floor exercise. This marked their season-best performance in this event. Emily Erb led in the anchor position, setting a new career-high with her 9.975 performance and claiming first place. Ana Castillo secured second, delivering a career-high 9.950. Karina Muñoz and Aurélie Tran both achieved career-high scores of 9.925 and 9.900 respectively, securing third place.
Head Coach Jen Llewellyn’s Statement
Head Coach Jen Llewellyn praised her team’s effort. Commenting on their accomplishment, she stated, “It was incredible to see our athletes step up and be resilient today. I couldn’t be more proud of them, it was very emotional seeing what they accomplished. They came together and believed in each other, and it showed in the team score.”
Coach Llewellyn also spoke about the team’s plan moving forward. “Looking ahead, every weekend we just need to strive to be a little bit better and find consistency. We had a couple of falls here and there, so I hope that we can learn from those and keep moving forward so that we are consistent.”

The Hawkeyes will next face the Terrapins of College Park, Maryland, on Friday, February 21. The action is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. CT and will be available for live stream on B1G+ (subscription required).
