Mobile networks also felt the strain, experiencing a 35% peak decline in service, although disruptions were largely mitigated through robust network redundancy strategies.

The brunt of the damage was concentrated in several counties, including Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Monaghan, Westmeath, Longford, and Donegal. The rugged terrain and extensive damage to infrastructure in these regions have posed significant challenges to restoration efforts.

Eir, Ireland’s largest telecom provider, has mobilized its teams to restore service as quickly and efficiently as possible. The company has pledged to complete all remaining repairs within ten days, although complex damages in some areas may necessitate a longer timeframe.

To alleviate the immediate inconvenience for affected customers, Eir has deployed over 1,000 mobile broadband devices, while also prioritizing repairs for vulnerable individuals and those reliant on broadband for essential services.

While the drive to restore connectivity is relentless, the incident highlights the considerable challenges associated with maintaining telecommunications infrastructure in the face of severe weather events. Unlike power outages, telecommunications faults often remain undetected until power is restored, extending the duration of the disruption.

The unprecedented scale of cuts experienced in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn has prompted calls for greater resilience in Ireland’s telecommunications network.

ComReg plans to leverage the lessons learned from this event to develop comprehensive emergency response plans and advocate for more robust and diversified infrastructure investments, ensuring a more resilient telecommunications landscape for the future.
