City-Killer Asteroid: NASA Lowers Impact Odds for 2032
A major update from NASA has slightly eased concerns about a potentially hazardous asteroid dubbed "city-killer," designated 2024 YR4. The space agency now predicts a 1.5 percent chance of the asteroid impacting Earth on December 22, 2032, a reduction from the earlier 3.1 percent estimate.
This revised assessment is based on improved observations of the asteroid’s trajectory.
2024 YR4, measuring approximately 90 meters in size – roughly the scale of London’s iconic Big Ben, – falls into the category of asteroids capable of significant destruction if it were to collide with a populated area. The asteroid’s potential impact zone stretches across a vast swath of the planet, encompassing parts of South America, the Pacific Ocean, South Asia, the Arabian Sea, and Africa.
While the risk remains, this refined prediction brings a flicker of hope. Communities within this "risk corridor," including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Nigeria, are advised to stay informed about potential developments.
The impact of an object similar in size to 2024 YR4 is highlighted by the Tunguska event in 1908, which flattened over 830 square miles of Siberian forest. This serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences such an impact could have on densely populated areas.
First discovered in December 2024 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile, 2024 YR4 has been a top priority for NASA’s planetary defense efforts. Its initial impact probability of 1.3 percent, though slightly lower than the current estimate, underscored the urgency of continuous monitoring and preparedness.
The agency is actively developing and testing strategies to prevent or mitigate asteroid impacts, such as the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission. This successful 2021 mission demonstrated the feasibility of altering an asteroid’s trajectory by crashing a spacecraft into it.
