A five-year-old boy and a man in his 20s have died in separate road crashes in Co Laois and Co Westmeath.
The boy was killed in an incident that happened at Kilminchy in Portlaoise at around 4.20pm.
He was brought to Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise in a serious condition.
The boy was pronounced dead a short time later.
Gardaí say a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
A woman in her 40s, who was driving the car, was not injured.
The road is currently closed and will remain closed overnight and a technical examination is due to be carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators tomorrow morning.
