Rory McIlroy built on his strong opening round at The Players Championship to sit two strokes off the clubhouse lead following Friday’s first wave at TPC Sawgrass.
Shane Lowry and Seamus Power are out in the afternoon session, and for so long it looked like they’d be looking up to a familiar face at the top of the leaderboard only for two late bogeys to shift McIlroy down to nine-under par.
That leaves him two off Australia’s Min Woo Lee, who carded a brilliant 66, and alongside American Collin Morikawa who raced into contention with a sizzling 65 that included nine birdies in all.
