Johnny McEvoy on the death of his beloved wife: ‘I never said goodbye. She didn’t either. She was going. She wouldn’t do any more chemo’

It was starting to feel like that song by Little Richard, Keep a Knockin’ (But You Can’t Come In). At the appointed time of noon, I knocked seven or eight times on the door of Johnny McEvoy’s fifth-floor apartment in Greystones. Through the wooden door I could hear the voice of Long Before Your Time and The Boston Burglar talking to someone.

I was about to give up when the door opens suddenly – Darren, who turns out to be his manager, invites me in. Johnny is sitting at the kitchen table drinking a cup of tea.
