Indonesia‘s Egg Industry: A Beacon of Stability Amidst Global Eggflation

Published: March 26, 2025

Global Eggflation: A Crisis Averted in Indonesia

While many nations grapple with soaring chicken egg prices due to outbreaks of avian influenza and supply chain disruptions, Indonesia stands out as a model of stability. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has emphasized that Indonesia boasts some of the world’s most affordable chicken eggs, a stark contrast to prices in countries like Singapore, the United States, and France, where prices have skyrocketed.

For context, recent data indicates that Singapore’s egg prices hover around US $3.24 (approximately Rp. 53,687), while the United States sees prices at US $4.11 (around Rp. 68,103), and France at US $4.08 (approximately Rp. 103,063). These figures highlight the severity of the global “eggflation” phenomenon, which Indonesia has largely managed to avoid.

Indonesia’s Surplus: A Testament to Strong Production

According to Moch. Arief Cahyono, Head of Interaction and Details Services at the Ministry of Agriculture, Indonesia’s success stems from a robust domestic production capacity. The nation currently enjoys a surplus of chicken eggs, ensuring that supply meets and even exceeds demand.

this surplus shows a strong production capacity. We will continue to ensure a balance between supply and prices so as not to harm farmers or consumers.

the National Food Agency (Bapanas) projects that Indonesia’s purebred chicken egg production will reach 6.4 million tons in 2025, far surpassing the monthly national demand of approximately 518,000 tons. This surplus allows Indonesia to maintain stable prices, with the national average hovering around Rp. 29,475 per kilogram. In Jakarta, prices are even lower, averaging Rp. 27,688 per kilogram.

Strategic Initiatives: Ensuring Stability and Affordability

The Indonesian government has implemented several strategic initiatives to bolster the poultry industry and ensure stable egg prices. These include:

  • Corn production Enhancement: Recognizing corn as a crucial component of chicken feed, the government has focused on increasing national corn production through the development of corn centers.
  • Feed Distribution Optimization: Efforts are underway to streamline the distribution of animal feed, ensuring that farmers have access to essential resources.
  • Option Feed sources: The government is exploring and promoting the use of alternative raw materials for animal feed to reduce reliance on customary sources.

export Opportunities: Capitalizing on Global Shortages

Indonesia’s surplus egg production presents a critically important opportunity to capitalize on global shortages. The Ministry of Agriculture is actively exploring export opportunities, with the United States identified as a potential market.

Arief Cahyono stated that the government is prepared to export 1.6 million eggs monthly, leveraging the nation’s strong production capacity to address supply gaps in other countries. This initiative not only benefits the Indonesian economy but also contributes to global food security.

The shortage of stock in other countries can be an opportunity for us to export. One of the export plans is to the United States.Based on commodity balance sheet, the government is ready to send 1.6 million eggs every month.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Success and Addressing Nutritional Needs

While celebrating Indonesia’s success in maintaining stable egg prices and surplus production, Minister Sulaiman emphasized the importance of prioritizing domestic nutritional needs. The current egg supply is crucial for supporting free nutritional eating programs, ensuring that Indonesian citizens have access to essential nutrients.

The government remains committed to balancing export opportunities with domestic needs, ensuring that Indonesia’s egg industry continues to thrive while contributing to the well-being of its population.
