Finding Humor in Hard Times: A New Production at the Latvian National Theater
In a landscape fraught with economic and social pressures, the Latvian National Theater is offering a unique form of catharsis: laughter. Their new production uses political satire and comedy to address the anxieties and frustrations felt by many Latvians. The play aims to provide a fresh outlook on the challenges facing the nation, from economic concerns to social issues.
Satire as a Coping Mechanism
The creative team believes that humor can be a powerful tool for navigating difficult times. Director Martins Egliens emphasizes the importance of finding the comic side of even the most frustrating situations. I believe that you are angry with many things in these times. A lot causes confusion and outrage. But… (and I know it in my experience) can look at everything on the comic side. And it helps! Maybe the world itself is not logical.
This sentiment is echoed by screenwriter marta Elīna Martinsone, who sees laughter as the key that can help you deal with fear and frustration.
Political satire and comedy based on topical issues help people respond to painful and also anxiety.[..] This is a difficult and ignorant time, and it is a great temptation to give up and sink into anger, sadness and apathy. But laughter is the key that can help you deal with fear and frustration.

Addressing Key Issues Through Comedy
The production doesn’t shy away from tackling sensitive topics. It directly references the financial strain of national defense, the need to save vital infrastructure projects like rail Baltica and Air Baltic, and the importance of improving healthcare, education, and demography. The play also touches on the need to motivate young people and care for retirees, highlighting the multifaceted challenges facing Latvia today.
The play’s annotation suggests a critical yet humorous look at the political landscape: It is so easy to laugh at politicians and officials who do but do not! the more you do, the more you don’t get, but the progress is! Rapid! So to say – go as lubricated! It’s just a pity that in the wrong direction …What if we boarded their shoes? We could change everything! But we have solutions for everything! Isn’t it? Well then – let’s take it!
