Boxing Icon Recognized for Anti-Addiction Advocacy
Julio César Chávez, the celebrated world boxing champion, has been lauded for his dedication to promoting peace and combating addiction. This recognition occurred in anticipation of the nationwide Box Megaclase event scheduled for April 6th, a massive boxing class intended to unite communities across Mexico.
During President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo‘s morning conference (“Mañanera”) at the Palacio Nacional on Friday, March 28th, chávez openly discussed Mexico’s struggles with drug addiction, particularly highlighting the dangers of fentanyl. He shared his personal triumph over addiction, noting that he has maintained sobriety for 16 years thanks to a recovery program. Chávez now operates clinics dedicated to helping others overcome similar challenges.
Thank God we have helped a lot of people… Mexico, because sadly we are going through challenging times where there is a lot of drug addiction, there is a lot of fentanyl that kills, not only destroys but kills many people, but fortunately thanks to God, little by little, we are getting out of this.
Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, has become a major concern in both the United States and Mexico. According to the CDC,synthetic opioids,primarily fentanyl,are the main driver of drug overdose deaths. Provisional data from the CDC estimates that 73,838 overdose deaths in the United States involved synthetic opioids othre than methadone in 2023.
A Symbol of Hope and Resilience
Chávez’s presence at the conference extended beyond words. He presented a clock to the treasury hall and demonstrated boxing techniques, symbolizing the fight against addiction and the importance of discipline and perseverance.
World Boxing Council President Hails Chávez’s Legacy
Mauricio Sulaimán, president of the World Boxing Council, emphasized the ancient importance of the upcoming mass boxing class. He acknowledged Chávez’s pivotal role in elevating Mexico’s status in the boxing world and celebrated his 16 years of sobriety.

Nationwide Initiatives for Peace and Recovery
Rommel Pacheco, head of the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (Conade), announced a nationwide race for peace and against addictions, scheduled for March 30th across all 32 Mexican states. This event underscores the government’s commitment to addressing addiction and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Mass boxing Class: A Historic Event
While there are no immediate plans to pursue a Guinness World Record, officials emphasize the historical importance of the box Megaclase event. The event aims to bring communities together, promote physical activity, and raise awareness about the fight against addiction.
Beyond whether there is a record, it will be historical.
