Unexpected Arctic Blast Threatens Spring Bloom in Bulgaria
Late-Season Freeze Imperils Fruit Crops
Bulgaria faces an unseasonable cold snap next week, with a surge of Arctic air poised to sweep across the country. This sudden temperature drop poses a notable threat to fruit crops already in bloom, potentially leading to substantial agricultural losses. Climate experts warn that the timing of this cold air intrusion is particularly hazardous, as many fruit trees are especially vulnerable during their flowering stage.
According to climatologist Simeon Matev, the most critical period will be from Tuesday to Thursday, when temperatures are expected to plummet below -5°C in some regions. For these flowering types, a critical temperature is minus 2
, Matev stated, highlighting the narrow margin for survival. This late frost could decimate yields for various fruit growers, impacting both domestic supply and export markets.
The expectations are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in places the temperatures drop below minus 5 degrees, and for these flowering types of critical temperature is minus 2.

snowfall Expected, Winter Sports Impacted
Along with the freezing temperatures, some areas, particularly in the pre-Balkan region, may experience snowfall. The mountainous regions of Rila, Pirin, and the Western Rhodopes are forecast to receive significant snowfall, potentially accumulating 20-30 cm of new snow cover. While this might seem beneficial for late-season winter sports, the overall winter season has been described as “adverse” for enthusiasts.
While December started promisingly, March saw a decline in natural snow cover, leading to early closures at some resorts. However, popular destinations like Bansko and Pamporovo are expected to remain open thru the Easter holidays, offering a final opportunity for skiing and snowboarding. This is despite the fact that, according to recent data from the Bulgarian Ski Federation, the number of skiers visiting resorts in March 2025 was down 15% compared to the previous year, largely due to inconsistent snow conditions.
Easter Warmth and Summer Outlook
Looking ahead, a significant warming trend is anticipated by the following Sunday, promising pleasant weather for the Easter holidays with temperatures reaching as high as 25°C. This respite from the cold will be welcomed by many, especially those planning outdoor celebrations.
Furthermore, the long-term forecast suggests that the upcoming summer is likely to be warmer than average. While this might potentially be good news for tourism, it also raises concerns about potential droughts and water scarcity, issues that have become increasingly prevalent in recent years across the Balkan region. The Bulgarian Ministry of Surroundings and Water is currently developing strategies to mitigate the potential impacts of a hotter summer, focusing on water conservation and efficient irrigation techniques.
