Man’s appeal against rape conviction ‘hung over’ victim

A woman who was raped by a work colleague almost 12 years ago has criticised the length of time it has taken his appeal against his conviction to be heard.

Ciara Mangan was raped by 30-year-old Shane Noonan, of Turlough Road, Castlebar in Co Mayo, at a party in May 2013.

They were both 18 at the time and working together in a fast food restaurant in Castlebar.

He pleaded guilty shortly before his trial was due to start in 2023 and was sentenced to eight years with the final year suspended.

The Appeal Court upheld that sentence this afternoon.

Ms Mangan said the appeal had hung over her for 22 months and it was only now she felt she had got justice.
