Wehrlein had measured things expertly as he sat just behind teammate and then-leader Antonio Felix da Costa as the race headed towards its climax. He was able to slice by da Costa in ATTACK MODE for P1 before a three-car shunt spelled trouble with the laps dwindling.
The reigning champion ultimately crossed the line second as time ran out for most of the pack to make use of their final, mandatory 50kW ATTACK MODE power boosts before the chequered flag was flown – due to a late-race Red Flag. Polesitter Norman Nato (Nissan) was one of those who would be penalised and despite crossing the line first, that left Wehrlein the net race winner.
