The event highlighted the personal journeys of individuals grappling with cancer. Henri Delord, recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, shared his initial reluctance to discuss his condition, emphasizing the importance of support networks in overcoming this hesitation. He acknowledged his wife’s encouragement in seeking support,a sentiment echoed by others present.

It’s rare to see men…and even me, it is indeed in relation to my wife who pushed me a little… And in relation to that, there is more support.

Caregivers, frequently enough unsung heroes, also shared their experiences. Marcel Tautu Fariuriu spoke of the challenges of caring for his wife, whose breast cancer treatment has significantly impacted her physical abilities. His dedication underscores the demanding role caregivers play in supporting loved ones through cancer.

We removed her lymph nodes so she can do nothing, even hold a bowl, she trembles with her left hand. And that’s the hardest for me, I have to be with her every day for daily work at home.

Pauline Kavera, a caregiver, highlighted the importance of support for travel expenses, assistance with personal care, and access to appropriate nutritional resources.

Expanding Access to Care: International Collaborations

Recognizing the importance of accessible and culturally sensitive care, the association A TAUTURU IA NA is facilitating medical trips to New Zealand. Angelina Drapé,the association’s secretary,shared a significant advancement: a New Zealand hospital has implemented a program with French-speaking medical professionals from Switzerland,ensuring that patients from French Polynesia receive comprehensive and linguistically appropriate care. this initiative addresses a critical barrier to accessing quality healthcare abroad.

We met the director of the New Zealand hospital who confirmed to us that for 1 year, they have set up caregivers, doctors who come from Switzerland, speak French and accompany our patients. So these patients are pampered and do not have to worry at all.
