Increased Traffic Expected: Additional Lanes Activated on AP-7 for Holiday Travel
Anticipating Congestion: Operation “Salida” and Expanded Mobility Windows
As holiday travel surges, Catalan traffic authorities are implementing measures to mitigate congestion on key roadways. The traditional mobility window for “Operación Salida” (Operation Exit), the period of increased traffic flow at the start of a holiday period, has been extended to accommodate the growing volume of travelers. This year, the focus is on optimizing traffic flow on the AP-7 highway, a critical artery for both domestic and international travel.
Strategic Lane Additions on the AP-7
To address potential bottlenecks, additional lanes will be activated on specific segments of the AP-7.Northbound,a 53-kilometer stretch between Montornès del Vallès (barcelona) and Sils (Girona) will benefit from extra capacity. Southbound, a 43-kilometer section between Martorell and Banyeres del Penedès (Tarragona) will also see lane expansions. These measures aim to improve traffic flow and reduce delays during peak travel times.
Restrictions and Speed Limits During Lane Activation
During the operation of these additional lanes, certain restrictions will be in place to ensure safety and efficiency. Notably, vans and motorhomes will be prohibited from using the added lanes to prevent potential obstructions in case of breakdowns. A reduced speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour will be enforced in both directions within these sections. Moreover, trucks will be required to remain in the right-hand lane and adhere to a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
These restrictions are crucial for maintaining a consistent flow of traffic and minimizing the risk of accidents during periods of high congestion.
Return Journey Preparations: Additional Lanes for “Operación Retorno”
Looking ahead to the return journey, known as “operación Retorno,” traffic authorities are also planning to activate additional lanes on the AP-7 and C-32 north. The usual three additional lanes will be implemented on the AP-7 and C-32 north, between Vilafranca and Molins de Rei, between Sant Celoni, Llinars del Vallès and Montornès and between Sant andreu de Llavaneres and Montgat. These measures are designed to facilitate a smoother return for holidaymakers and prevent excessive delays.
Current Traffic Trends and Projections
According to recent data from the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), holiday travel has been steadily increasing in recent years. In 2024, over 90 million long-distance journeys were recorded during holiday periods, highlighting the importance of proactive traffic management strategies.the implementation of additional lanes and traffic restrictions is a key component of these strategies, aiming to ensure safer and more efficient travel for all road users.
