Akkuyu’s fourth Unit Receives Vital Turbine Components

The FESCO transport group has successfully delivered a substantial consignment of turbine-generator equipment to the Vostochny load terminal in Türkiye, destined for the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. This delivery marks a significant step forward in the construction of the plant’s fourth unit.

The shipment, weighing in at a total of 1,240 tons, comprised 139 individual pieces of equipment crucial for the turbine island of the plant’s fourth reactor. The most significant component was a stator exceeding 435 tons.

Logistical Precision: Overcoming Challenges in Heavy Equipment Transport

The unloading process required meticulous planning and execution. The massive stator, along with other heavy components, was carefully offloaded from the vessel using a heavy-duty bearing crane. From the pier, the equipment was transported to a designated warehouse using specialized hydraulic modular axles and an SBL-1100 portal system, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of these critical components.

This operation highlights the complex logistical challenges involved in constructing nuclear power plants, where the transportation of oversized and heavy equipment demands specialized expertise and infrastructure.

FESCO’s Role as Key Logistics Partner

FESCO has solidified its position as the exclusive logistics operator for the Vostochny load terminal of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. Following a accomplished tender in October 2024, FESCO secured a new contract with Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, entrusting them with extensive loading, unloading, and transport services. This includes the progress of essential logistics infrastructure and the management of both ships and cargo within the terminal.

Fesco is the only logistics operator of the Vostochny load terminal of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant.

This partnership underscores the importance of reliable and experienced logistics providers in supporting large-scale infrastructure projects like the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant.

Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant: A Cornerstone of Türkiye’s Energy Strategy

The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant represents Türkiye’s first foray into nuclear energy. The project, spearheaded by rosatom State Corporation, encompasses four energy units, each featuring advanced VVER-1200 reactors of Russian design. These reactors are Generation III+ type, known for their enhanced safety features and efficiency.

As Türkiye aims to diversify its energy sources and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting the country’s growing energy demands. the plant is expected to generate approximately 35 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to power millions of homes.

the project has faced some controversy, with environmental groups raising concerns about the plant’s potential impact on the surrounding ecosystem. However, the Turkish government has emphasized the project’s importance for energy security and economic development.
