Celebrating Galician-Portuguese lyric Poetry

A new initiative is underway to safeguard and promote the rich literary heritage of Galicia. The first volume of I Cantigas of Love has been unveiled, a project supported by the Xunta de Galicia as part of the broader Universe Cantigas initiative. This project aims to disseminate Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry, a vital component of Galician cultural identity.

A Commitment to Cultural Preservation

Valentín García, Secretary General of the Language, emphasized the regional government’s dedication to preserving and protecting this literary legacy. Speaking at the presentation in A Coruña,García acknowledged the work of scholars and researchers who dedicate themselves to studying and interpreting these historical works,making them accessible to a wider audience. This commitment reflects a growing global trend in cultural heritage preservation, with organizations like UNESCO actively supporting initiatives to protect and promote endangered languages and cultural traditions.

Honoring songwriters and oral Traditions

The upcoming Day of Galician Letters on May 17th will further highlight the importance of Galician literature, with a special focus on songwriters. In conjunction with this party, Manuel Rico Verea’s Galician Popular Singing, a commentary on the work of Luis María Fernández Espinosa, a prominent figure in the historiography of Galician songwriters of oral tradition, was also presented. This underscores the significance of oral traditions in shaping Galician cultural identity.

Renewing Language Standardization Efforts

Beyond specific publications, the Ministry of Culture, Language and Youth is actively promoting the use and prestige of the Galician language through a complete approach. This includes ongoing meetings with over one hundred experts who are part of commissions tasked with renewing the General Plan of Standardization of the Galician Language, building upon the framework established by the Pact for the Language. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to language revitalization, ensuring the continued vitality of Galician in the 21st century. Similar efforts are underway in other regions with minority languages, such as Wales and Brittany, demonstrating a global commitment to linguistic diversity.
