Trump meets with Syria’s president after lifting sanctions on country

Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa have met face-to-face in Saudi Arabia, in the first meeting between US and Syrian leaders in 25 years.

The brief meeting on Wednesday, hosted by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, followed a surprise announcement by Mr Trump the night before that the US would lift crippling economic sanctions on Syria.

Arab leaders and the United Nations had been urging the US to make that call in a bid to help rebuild Syria’s crumbling economy, after the oppressive and brutal Assad regime was toppled in December last year.
