Denis Shapovalov ousted from Australian Open second round by Marin Cilic

Canadian Denis Shapovalov was eliminated from the Australian Open after losing to Marin Cilic in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 early on Thursday morning.

The 23rd ranked Shapovalov was unable to build on a solid opening-round performance against Yunchaokete Bu as he committed 42 unforced errors to just 12 winners in the loss.

Shapovalov was unable to get much going on his own serve, winning just 51 per cent of his total service points and just 33 per cent of his second-serve points.

Cilic, the world No. 70 and 2014 US Open winner, was in control of the match from the beginning, commiting just 24 unforced errors while hitting 20 winners in the victory. The veteran won 86 per cent of his service games and faced break point just six…
