In the summer of 1990, five days before the Republic of Ireland’s opening game against England at the World Cup, I had just checked-in to a small hotel near Rome when the receptionist presented me with a note to call the office.

It was actually a telegram — that’s what we called WhatsApp back then. There was no world wide web or smart phones.
