SATELITNEWS.COM, TANGERANG – Throughout 2025, hundreds of thousands of children in Tangerang Regency will have to fight against acute respiratory infections (ARI). The Tangerang Regency Health Service (Dinkes) recorded that 198,000 cases of ISPA attacked children, while 104,000 other cases occurred in adults. The total reaches 302,000 cases in a year.
This figure is an alarm for the Health Department entering 2026. Supervision is starting to be tightened, while parents are advised to be more alert to symptoms that are often considered trivial, such as coughs and colds.
Head of the Tangerang District Health Service, Hendra Tarmizi, confirmed that all cases in 2025 have been handled.
“However, all have been treated and thank God they have been confirmed cured,” said Hendra to Satellite News, Wednesday (11/2/2026).
He explained that ARI is a general term for disorders of the upper respiratory tract, such as coughs and colds. Even though it looks mild, delayed treatment—especially in toddlers—can be fatal.
Therefore, in 2026 the Health Department will tighten monitoring of case trends by expanding early detection of ISPA sufferers. The goal is clear: to prevent cases from developing into pneumonia or acute pneumonia, which carries a high risk of death, especially in children.
“In addition to suppressing ARI cases, this step was taken to anticipate the risk of serious complications in the form of pneumonia which has the potential to cause death, especially in the children’s age group,” he explained.
Entering early 2026, the graph of ISPA cases has not shown a significant decline. In January alone, the Health Department received reports of around 10,000 new cases. However, epidemiologically, this figure is still within normal limits when compared with the population of Tangerang Regency which reaches around 3.5 million people.
“Actually, the figure is still normal because it has not yet reached 10 percent of the total population. However, the main point is not just the figure, but awareness. If not handled properly, children under five will be very susceptible to pneumonia,” stressed Hendra.
In the same place, the Secretary of the Tangerang District Health Service, Sri Indriyani, reminded the importance of the role of parents in prevention. He appealed to parents to be more sensitive to their child’s health condition and immediately take them to a health facility if the cough and cold do not go away.
Apart from that, parents are also asked to ensure that their children have adequate nutrition and hydration to maintain their immune system, as well as prevent their children from being exposed to air pollution and cigarette smoke in the home environment.
It is hoped that these simple steps will be able to reduce the rate of ISPA and prevent more serious complications this year. (alfian/aditya)
