The Chinatown of San José celebrates the Chinese New Year today with a day full of color, music and traditions open to the public.
The event brings together free cultural activities that fuse Chinese and Costa Rican heritage, to enjoy one of the most important festivities of the lunar calendar.
The activity is organized by the Chinese Colony Association in Costa Rica, with the support of the Municipality of San José and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.
This 2026 begins the Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of energy, independence and determination, a cycle that promises dynamism and personal and collective transformation.
The holiday, also known as the Spring Festival, has more than 4,000 years of history and celebrates renewal, prosperity and family unity.
In Costa Rica, the celebration of the Chinese New Year is consolidated as a cultural encounter that strengthens the ties of friendship between both countries.
Isabel Yung, representative of the Colonia China Association, highlighted that the festival “reinforces the union between our communities and the pride in sharing ancient traditions.”
