Handball second division team TuSEM Essen lost the first away game of the year. On the 19th matchday, coach Kenji Hövels’ team lost to TV Hüttenberg 34:37 ​​(19:23). Felix Mart was the top scorer for the TuSEM with seven goals, while David Kuntscher also scored seven times on the Hüttenberger side. In addition, Finn Knaack (16 saves) and TVH keeper Yahav Shamir (eleven saves) were often able to distinguish themselves.

After the home win at the start of the second half of the season against the Eulen Ludwigshafen, the first TuSEM away win of the season was to be achieved in Central Hesse. In front of around 1,400 spectators at the Hüttenberg sports center, Alexander Schoss scored Essen’s first goal before the left-hander had to come off injured. Bad news for TuSEM, which was subsequently literally overrun by the hosts. The Essen team had no access at all defensively, goalkeeper Dominik Plaue remained unlucky in his old place of work. Kenji Hövels called the first time-out at 4:9 in the ninth minute, but it only had a limited effect. Hüttenberg punished every Essen mistake coldly and was already leading 8:16 after 17 minutes. It threatened to be a bad evening for TuSEM, but with the courage of desperation they gradually “worked their way” into the game. The goalkeeper change from Plaue to Knaack had an effect and Felix Mart took command up front. In addition, there was a very strong performance from substitute veteran Alexander Becker, who visibly gave the defense stability. Around 30 TuSEM fans who had traveled with us saw a great comeback by the Essen team, Felix Göttler scored the 18:20 a good three minutes before the half-time siren. The Hövels seven were at it again, but ultimately went into the break four goals behind.

What was noticeable was that Hövels took risks early in the first half and relied on the seventh field player. As a result, the hosts were not able to cover quite as offensively as usual, but they still made things difficult for the Essen team. A move by TVH coach Stefan Kneer particularly paid off: he substituted goalkeeper Yahav Shamir, who drove the TuSEM to despair. While the Essen team were now much more stable in defense, they missed numerous free throws up front. This meant that Hüttenberg was always able to manage the lead, even if TuSEM was able to reduce it to four or three goals from time to time. At the latest at 31:37 (57th) by Vit Reichl, the fair was said, and in the final minutes the Essen team was still cosmeticizing their results. To make matters worse, Tim Mast had to leave the field shortly before the end of the game; the left winger twisted his ankle and limped off the field.

“We didn’t get any access at all in defense at the beginning, Hüttenberg was able to score a lot of goals through the tempo game. It happened a little too quickly for us. We shouldn’t have conceded 15 goals after 15 minutes,” said backcourt player Oskar Kostuj, criticizing the initial phase. “Our 7-on-6 works quite well. We made some breakthroughs and made good use of our free chances. In the end we didn’t manage to get within a goal and let the momentum shift completely to our side,” said the 25-year-old.

Instead, the A-Youth team achieved a more pleasing result: Coach Florian Buddenborg’s team won 32:30 against the Mittelhessen Youngsters before the second division game in the same hall and thus preserved their chance of qualifying for the final round of the German championship. The next away game for the professionals awaits next week, on Friday (February 20th) the Essen team will be guests at the bottom team without a win, HC Oppenweiler/Backnang. Kick-off in the Murrtal Arena is at 7:30 p.m.
