A Historical Perspective
The area now known as Jupiter has a history stretching back to the Spanish era, originally called “Jobe” after a nearby Indian village. When the English arrived in 1763, the name was Anglicized to Jupiter, referencing the Roman god Jove (equivalent to Jupiter in Roman mythology).
Fort Jupiter was established in 1838 following conflicts with the Seminole Indians on the Loxahatchee River. The subsequent Jupiter Military Reservation, encompassing 9,088 acres and including the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, was created in 1855. But, logistical challenges related to illness among the garrison and the inlet’s tendency to close led to the fort’s abandonment in 1860. A post office briefly operated at the lighthouse in 1884, and was reestablished in 1887 at the Jupiter Lifesaving Station by Mary Moore “Mollie” Carlin.
The DuBois family were early pioneers in the area, with their former homestead now preserved as part of Palm Beach County’s DuBois Park, offering insights into early life in Jupiter. Jupiter was similarly a stop on the “Celestial Railroad,” a 7.5-mile line that connected travelers to Lake Worth.
