Lisa Irenius: Leading Svenska Dagbladet into the Digital Future
Lisa Maria Irenius, born May 11, 1978, is a prominent Swedish journalist currently serving as the Editor-in-Chief and CEO of Svenska Dagbladet (SvD), one of Sweden’s leading newspapers. Her career spans diverse roles in journalism and cultural leadership, culminating in her current position since 2023. Irenius is steering SvD through a period of significant organizational change and digital transformation.
Early Life and Education
Irenius has international experience, having lived in France, Italy, and Belgium. Her academic background includes studies in French, philosophy, and political science at the University of Paris and Stockholm University. She furthered her education with a master’s degree in European politics from the College of Europe in Bruges.
Career Trajectory
Irenius began her journalism career working for the internet agency Virgule Bleue and the French magazine Futuribles in Paris. She also contributed as a freelance writer to publications such as Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, and Axess.
Returning to Sweden in 2005, Irenius held editorial positions at Axess (2005-2007) and as an editor for the opinion and criticism pages of Dagens Nyheter’s culture section (2008-2009). In 2008, she became the culture editor of Upsala Nya Tidning, responsible for reshaping the newspaper’s cultural coverage following a merger of roles.
In 2013, Irenius received the Stora journalistpriset (Great Journalist Award) in the category of “Årets förnyare” (Innovator of the Year) for her development of cultural journalism at the publication. She joined Svenska Dagbladet as its culture editor in January 2015, becoming the first woman to hold that position.
Leadership at Svenska Dagbladet
At the end of 2023, Irenius assumed the dual role of Editor-in-Chief and CEO of Svenska Dagbladet. She is currently leading the newspaper through an organizational shift aimed at strengthening collaboration between editorial and commercial teams and embracing new storytelling formats.
Under her leadership, Svenska Dagbladet has experienced a 20% growth in digital subscribers since the beginning of 2024. This growth occurs within the context of broader changes at Schibsted Media, the parent company, which was split into two companies in 2024: Schibsted Media (owned by The Tinius Trust) and Schibsted Marketplaces (renamed Vend).
