X’s Algorithm Amplifies Conservative Views, Study Finds
A novel study published on Wednesday, February 18, in the journal Nature reveals that X’s (formerly Twitter) algorithm can shift users’ political attitudes toward more conservative positions. The research indicates that activating the “For You” algorithmic feed increases interaction with conservative content and influences opinions on public policy and current events.
Study Methodology and Findings
The study, titled “The political effects of X’s feed algorithm,” involved 4,965 users in the United States over seven weeks, from July to September 2023. Participants were randomly assigned to either a chronological feed (“Following”) or an algorithmic feed (“For You”). Researchers compared the experiences of users who switched between the two feed types, analyzing content viewed, platform behavior, and accounts followed, alongside pre- and post-treatment surveys.
The research found that users who switched from the chronological feed to the algorithmic feed were less likely to reduce their platform usage and demonstrated a greater prioritization of issues commonly associated with the Republican Party, such as inflation, immigration, and crime. These users were also more likely to express skepticism towards the judicial investigations involving Donald Trump and held less favorable views of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in relation to the war in Ukraine.
Conversely, those who switched from the algorithmic feed to the chronological feed did not exhibit comparable changes in their attitudes. The study also found no significant effects on affective polarization or declared party identification in either group.
Algorithm’s Content Prioritization
To understand the underlying mechanisms, the research team analyzed the content promoted by the algorithm. The study found that the “For You” feed algorithm prioritized conservative content and reduced the visibility of traditional media publications. Exposure to this content influenced user behavior, with those switching to the algorithmic feed beginning to follow conservative political activists, often maintaining those subscriptions even after reverting to the chronological feed.
The authors suggest this persistence explains the observed asymmetry: activating the algorithm generated detectable changes, while deactivating it did not produce equivalent effects.
Study Details and Transparency
The study was conducted by academics from European universities, without any collaboration from X. It was pre-registered with the American Economics Association and received ethical approval from the University of St. Gallen. Participants were recruited through YouGov, and 76% of participants reported using the algorithmic feed prior to the experiment. Compliance with assigned feed usage was reported at over 85% during the study period.
Implications and Future Research
The authors conclude that initial exposure to the X algorithm may have lasting effects on political attitudes and account selection, even without altering party affiliation. This research highlights the potential for social media algorithms to influence political discourse and underscores the necessitate for further investigation into the ethical implications of algorithmic content curation.
