HansaWorld CEO Spending Allegations: Legal Battles and Lawyer Withdrawal
A dispute involving HansaWorld, a Limerick-based software group, has escalated with allegations of extravagant personal spending by its CEO, Karl Bohlin, using company funds. The case has seen twists and turns, including the withdrawal of the company’s original legal representation following disagreements over a settlement.
Allegations of Misused Funds
Jennifer O’Carroll, HansaWorld’s chief operations officer, initiated legal proceedings against the company, seeking to lift her suspension as director and company secretary and to halt alleged interference in her role as COO. Central to her claims is the assertion that Bohlin prioritized his personal life, specifically finding a girlfriend, and allegedly used company resources to facilitate this, including screening potential partners through “illicit websites.”
O’Carroll alleges that Bohlin insisted on hiring these women, even if they were not suitable candidates, and used company funds to lease homes for them in locations such as China, and Dubai. The Irish Times reported on the settlement of the dispute in December 2025.
Lawyers Withdraw from Case
The legal team initially representing HansaWorld withdrew from the case after a proposed settlement was allegedly altered. According to reports from BreakingNews.ie, the signed settlement differed from the version agreed upon by the lawyers, leading them to “come off record.”
Mairéad McKenna, representing the solicitors, stated that the relationship between her client and HansaWorld had deteriorated due to difficulties in obtaining instructions and other issues during discussions. New solicitors have since been appointed to represent the firm.
High Court Involvement and Undertakings
The High Court has been involved in the proceedings, with Mr. Justice Brian Cregan granting O’Carroll permission to serve proceedings on HansaWorld. BizBrief reported that the court ruled a director could not be replaced at an EGM.
As part of an agreement, HansaWorld undertook not to take steps to dismiss O’Carroll while the case was ongoing. The case has been adjourned to allow HansaWorld to file replying affidavits.
Current Status
The case is now back on the normal court list awaiting a hearing date. The allegations remain unproven, and the legal proceedings are ongoing. The withdrawal of the original legal team adds another layer of complexity to the dispute.
