Delta Flight Diverted After Passenger Attempted to Breach Cockpit
A Delta Air Lines flight from Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was forced to return to Houston shortly after takeoff on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, due to a disruptive passenger. The incident prompted an emergency landing and the subsequent arrest of the individual.
Incident Details
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Delta flight 2557, a Boeing 717 aircraft, was airborne for approximately 15 minutes before the pilot declared an emergency CNN. The pilot informed air traffic control that a passenger had attempted to access the cockpit CNN. The pilot also reported that the passenger had assaulted another passenger.
Whereas initial reports indicated an attempt to breach the cockpit, Delta later clarified that the passenger exhibited “unruly and unlawful behavior towards other customers” and crew, but “did not make contact or attempt to access the flight deck” ABC7NY, USA Today.
Passengers on board described a chaotic scene. Amber Ward, a passenger on the flight, told ABC News affiliate WSB that the man “started punching everybody” before being subdued by other passengers ABC7NY, ABC News. She also stated the man was attempting to speak with the pilot ABC7NY.
Emergency Landing and Arrest
The flight landed safely back at Hobby Airport around 5:40 a.m. Local time ABC7NY. Upon landing, the passenger was taken into custody by police ABC7NY, ABC News, USA Today. Authorities have not yet released the passenger’s identity.

Delta Air Lines issued a statement emphasizing the safety of its customers and crew, stating they have “zero tolerance for unruly behavior” ABC7NY, ABC News. The airline apologized for the disruption and delay caused to passengers.
