Eric Dane, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star, Dies at 53 Following ALS Battle
Eric Dane, celebrated for his role as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, died on Thursday, February 19, 2026, following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 53 years old.
ALS Diagnosis and Advocacy
Dane publicly revealed his diagnosis of ALS in April 2025. He quickly became an advocate for awareness and research into the disease. Despite the progression of his illness, he remained optimistic, stating, “I don’t reckon this is the end of my story,” according to a report by USA Today.
Just weeks before his death, Dane had to withdraw from an ALS Network gala due to the physical challenges posed by the disease. USA Today reported that he was to be honored with the Dean and Kathleen Rasmussen Advocate of the Year Award at the event.
Early Career and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Breakthrough
Born November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, Dane began his acting career with appearances in television shows such as Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, and Married… with Children. He also had a recurring role on the series Charmed.
His breakthrough role came in 2006 when he joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “McSteamy” by fans. He remained with the show until 2012, with a reprise appearance in 2021. The Associated Press noted that the character quickly became a fan favorite.
Dane recalled one of his most memorable scenes from the show – emerging from a steam-filled bathroom in a towel – as a moment he hadn’t initially given much thought to. USA Today quoted him saying, “In the moment, it was just another scene to me.”
Later Roles and ‘Euphoria’
Following his departure from Grey’s Anatomy in 2012, Dane starred as Cmdr. Tom Chandler in TNT’s The Last Ship. He later appeared in HBO’s Euphoria as Cal Jacobs, the father of Nate Jacobs.
Dane’s film credits include X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Burlesque, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024). He also made a guest appearance in November 2025 on the drama Brilliant Minds, portraying a firefighter living with ALS.
Tributes from Co-Stars
Fellow Grey’s Anatomy cast members paid tribute to Dane on social media. Kevin McKidd, who plays Dr. Owen Hunt, posted a picture of the two of them in scrubs with the caption, “Rest In Peace buddy.” Kim Raver, who plays Dr. Teddy Altman, described Dane as “a light” and praised his comedic timing. USA Today reported on these tributes.

Eric Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie, and Georgia. His representatives stated that he will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. The Associated Press reported that the family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
