Polish speed skater suffers gruesome cut from rival’s blade

A Polish short-track speed skater left the Olympic arena on a stretcher with her face covered in blood on Friday night after a competitor’s blade sliced her under her left eye.

During a women’s 1,500m heat, Kamila Sellier went down along with the 14-times Olympic medal winner Arianna Fontana of Italy and the American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold. The skate on Santos-Griswold’s right foot caught Sellier in the face as she fell, inflicting a gruesome cut.

The race was paused while Sellier, 25, received medical attention, a large white sheet blocking her from the crowd in the Milan Ice Skating Arena on the final night of the short-track speed skating programme at the Winter Olympics. She eventually gave a thumbs-up to the…
