Daily meditation may reduce the risk of cancer spreading

Meditating daily to lower stress levels may also reduce the risk of cancer spreading, a scientist has suggested.

The results from early trials have found that levels of cortisol, often referred to as “the stress hormone”, remain stubbornly high in those with cancer while, in most people, they naturally rise and fall over the course of a day.

In research presented to one of the world’s largest science conferences, Dr Kimberly Bussey
from Midwestern University, said cortisol may increase the ability of cancer cells to spread and may also make them act more like stem cells, giving them a greater capacity to adapt and survive.

She conducted the research with Cassidy Kennedy, a medical student, and the findings were presented to a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Phoenix, Arizona.
