Respiratory Illnesses Surge Following Mardi Gras Celebrations
Recent Orleans, LA – Following the recent Mardi Gras festivities, doctors in New Orleans are reporting a significant increase in patients experiencing respiratory illnesses, including the flu, COVID-19, and RSV. The surge in cases is attributed to the large crowds and close proximity of individuals during the carnival season.
Spike in Respiratory Illnesses
Healthcare providers are observing a noticeable uptick in individuals seeking medical attention for respiratory symptoms. Dr. Courtney Washington noted that her office has seen a spike in patients testing positive for the flu, COVID-19, and RSV [1, 2]. This increase is typical after large gatherings where people are in confined spaces and in close contact with one another.
Crowds and Transmission
The nature of Mardi Gras celebrations – large parades, crowded sidewalks, and close interactions – creates an environment conducive to the spread of respiratory viruses. As Dr. Washington explained, “During Mardi Gras, everyone is in a confined space, and everyone is saying, ‘Throw me something, mister,’ and we’re in close proximity, so that makes it easy for respiratory viruses to be acquired.” [2]
Student Experiences
Tulane University student Paula Sims shared her experience, stating she developed a fever, cough, and congestion after attending Mardi Gras parades. “After going to all the parades and stuff and being in close corners with people, I came home with a really bad cough and congestion in my throat,” Sims said. She believes being surrounded by large crowds was the likely cause of her illness [1] and [2]. Many of her classmates are also experiencing similar symptoms [2].
Recommendations for Prevention and Treatment
Health officials recommend that individuals experiencing symptoms of a respiratory illness, such as fever, cough, or congestion, seek medical attention from an urgent care facility or their primary care physician [2]. It is particularly important for older adults to take their health seriously to avoid potential hospitalization and complications [2].
