Belgian Mobile Subscription Costs: How Much Are You Overpaying?
Your mobile subscription was once a good deal. But as the years go by, prices and what you get for your money change. A recent analysis found how much you may be overpaying if you haven’t compared plans in two or five years, regardless of your usage profile.
Understanding the Market Shift
To understand how mobile subscription prices and offerings have evolved, we examined the annual study by the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT). Each year, BIPT assesses the evolution of mobile subscriptions, both in terms of price and what’s included. It’s important to note that BIPT’s analysis does not factor in promotional offers.
Price Changes for Light Users
In the fourth quarter of 2021, Youfone offered an average of 7 euros per month for 200 calling minutes or text messages and 500 MB of mobile data. By the complete of 2024, hey! Mobile S provided 150 calling minutes, 500 text messages, and 5 GB of mobile data for the same average price of 7 euros per month. Subscriptions with only 500 MB of data were not found in the BIPT ranking at the time of the later assessment.
Currently, Mega Mobile 5 GB offers 200 calling minutes or texting for an average of 6.5 euros per month for the first year, with a 3 euro discount for the first two months. While this is only a 0.5 euro saving compared to the 2021 Youfone price, it provides 5 GB of mobile data instead of 500 MB. The most affordable option without a discount is hey! Mobile S, at 5 euros per month for unlimited calling, texting, and 15 GB of mobile data.
Evolution of Offers for Moderate Users
For moderate consumers, Youfone was the most affordable option in the fourth quarter of 2021, offering 200 calling minutes or text messages and 5 GB of mobile data for 10 euros per month. By the fourth quarter of 2024, Mobile Vikings offered 1,950 calling minutes, unlimited text messages, and 4 GB of mobile data for the same price. Alternatively, hey! Mobile S was available for an average of 7 euros per month, providing 5 GB of mobile data, 150 calling minutes, and 500 text messages.
Today, hey! Mobile S remains at 5 euros per month for a significantly improved package: unlimited calling, texting, and 15 GB of mobile data. Choosing Mega Mobile 5 GB for 200 calling minutes or texting and 5 GB of data costs an average of 6.5 euros per month for the first year, which is 3.5 euros less than the price five years ago. These deals represent significant savings for moderate users.
Cost Changes for Heavy Users
In the fourth quarter of 2021, Mobile Vikings offered the lowest price for unlimited calling, texting, and 10 GB of mobile data at an average of 15 euros per month. However, Yoin offered unlimited calling, unlimited texting, and 12 GB of mobile data for an average of 11 euros per month, a 4 euro monthly saving.
Currently, hey! Mobile S provides unlimited calling, texting, and 15 GB of mobile data for only 5 euros per month. This is a 10 euro monthly saving and 5 GB more data compared to the Mobile Vikings subscription from 2021. Careful comparison can save you 120 euros per year.
